About Ohtori Academy

Ohtori Academy is a residential school for students aged between 6 and 18.   It houses around a thousand students, with elementary through high school represented.  Graduating class sizes average around 75 pupils per year.

The school's buildings were constructed in the late 1890s after the Palace at Versailles as a residence for the family of Marquis (Kōshaku) Ohtori.  The Ohtori family has a diverse makeup, as throughout the Meiji period the family routinely adopted sons to continue its line.  During the industrial revolution, the Ohtori family owned several ceramics and metalwork factories, which produced consumer goods renowned for their fineness.  Post-war, the family converted their home into a private school for the children of Japanese and Allied bureaucrats.  The dream of the first headmaster was that Ohtori Academy should be a haven of peace in a turbulent world; a garden in which to tend gifted youths to full blossom.
